I had always thought of Taiwan as a true motorbike society — until I visited Hanoi. That impression was quickly and effortlessly revised. If anything, Hanoi takes it to another level. In terms of sheer density and chaotic energy, it might even surpass it.
Walking through the narrow alleys of the Old Quarter, your view is dominated by motorbikes — and then more motorbikes. Traffic lights are scarce, and the sound of honking seems less like a warning and more like a declaration of existence. At first glance, the flow of traffic appears completely unruly, yet somehow, miraculously, it works. It keeps moving.
In one photo I took, a mother sits on a scooter with her three children — all balanced effortlessly, as if this arrangement were the most natural thing in the world. No one looks nervous. No one clutches tightly. They each fit into their space with a calm familiarity. On that small scooter, there was a quiet, compact order — a portrait of everyday life, ingenuity, and family, all in motion.
