When strolling through a foreign town, one often sees things that one would not expect. Such was the case on this occasion. While walking in Vigan in the northern Philippines, I saw a young man walking a huge buffalo with a string attached to it. It is true that many buffaloes are used in the terraced rice paddies on the steep slopes in this country. However, Vigan is a large town in its own right. It is rare to see buffalo in a town like this, where there are no rice paddies or anything else.
As I watched, the young man walked normally as if he was walking his dog, and it was difficult to tell whether it was a pet or livestock. Although it is on a leash, I am wondering if that is enough to control a large buffalo. If it lunged at me, I would be in serious trouble.
