Yayoi Kusama is one of Japan's most famous artists. Although she is 93 years old, she is still an active artist who continues to exhibit her works. Fernando Botero, who paints the voluptuous Mona Lisa, is also still active at the age of 90 and is currently holding a solo exhibition in Japan, but Yayoi Kusama is not to be outdone. Yayoi Kusama is a living legend.
Although she has long been highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad, it is surprising that her museum was built not so long ago, in 2017. On the day of my visit, I visited the museum, which was built in Bentencho, Shinjuku.
For those who are not familiar with Yayoi Kusama's work, the image of her work is one of polka dots all over the place. However, not all of the works exhibited at the museum were covered with polka dots. It seems that in her younger days, she painted many works in which polka dots did not appear.
While looking at the works, I went up the floor. When I reached the top floor, I found a timeline of Yayoi Kusama's life on the wall. Since Yayoi Kusama is still active and not yet deceased, the timeline must be updated in real-time. It is an ongoing timeline.
