The common milk tea in Malaysia is called Teh Tarik, which contains condensed milk just like Vietnamese coffee. When I entered a cafe at Tanah Rata in Cameron Highlands, I ordered Teh Tarik, which is common in Malaysia.
An aproned man took my order, picked up the pot, and raised it. He then deftly poured it from the raised pot into the cup he held below. The craftsmanship made me feel like I was being treated to a spectacle.
The "teh" in Teh Tarik, like the English word "tea," the German word "tee," and the French word "thé," is said to come from the Minnan word "teh," which is used from southern Fujian to Taiwan. In other words, even in Malaysia, where tea plantations are now widespread, the tea tree is a foreign species.
