Since ancient times, India has been known as a "treasure house of cloth." In particular, Indian plain weave cotton cloth called calico became popular in Europe. The motivation to produce large quantities of this cotton fabric at low cost prompted technological innovation in England, and it is even said to have led to the rise of the Industrial Revolution. History is ironic because as a result, large quantities of British-made cotton fabrics flowed into India, leaving many craftsmen unemployed.

While walking around Pune, I found a store that dealt in cloth. A man working inside was cutting fabric with scissors. I pointed my camera at him, not knowing if this was calico or not, and he put his scissors down and smiled at me. It was a beautiful smile. Not only his smile, but his smooth head shone in the dimly lit store.
