When I was walking through the city of Berhampore, I came to a general store. A man with a wide forehead was standing in front of the small general store. As I focused on him, the bearded man who was standing there smiled. There were other people hanging out in front of this store as well as this man. It seemed to be a bit of a social gathering place. If I could speak Bengali, I'd love to join in.
As I mentioned above, Berhampol belongs to West Bengal, which is "West". Then there is no such thing as East Bengal. East Bengal is a separate country from India, and Bangladesh corresponds to it. To begin with, the name of the country, Bangladesh, means Bengali country.
What is now West Bengal and Bangladesh together was the state of Bengal during the colonial period, but when it seceded from India, the Muslim-majority area became Bangladesh and the Hindu-majority area became West Bengal in India. Nowadays, even in the same Bengal state, the Indian side used to be developed while the Bangladeshi side has been branded as the poorest country, and there is a considerable disparity between the two sides.
