A man with a beard under his nose gave me a toothy smile in front of the wall. He had a thick beard and a hot face, but his smile was refreshing despite his hotness.
I could see several numbers written on the wall behind this man. Is it the phone number of a store? As I looked at it, I suddenly remembered that India was the country that created the concept of zero.
It was a 7th century Indian mathematician and astronomer named Brahmagupta who first defined the idea of zero. Brahmagupta, who was the director of the observatory in the city of Ujjain in what is now central India, wrote the concept of zero as a number in his book Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta.
