The rickshaw wallah parked his cycle rickshaw in the shade formed on the side of the road and took a break. The sun was still high in the sky and it was hot in Kolkata. Many of the people working on the streets were taking a break like this man. Most people here work at a leisurely pace. It is almost impossible to work diligently when it is this hot.
Rickshaw wallah is a person who paddles a rickshaw. In India, the word "wallah" seems to indicate a person who carries something. Thus, a taxi driver is a taxi wallah, a chai delivery person is a chai wallah, and a dabbawallah is a lunch box delivery person who carries a lunch box called a dabbah. Perhaps when Indians come to Japan, they must describe the person who delivers soba (buckwheat noodles) as a buckwheat wallah.
