A woman was reading in the shade. But she is not simply reading on the side of the road in Pyay with the traffic in the background. She is at work, although at first glance it appears that she is leisurely passing her free time. She is an attendant at a pay phone placed on the corner of the street.
In Myanmar, where cell phones are not widely used, many people still use pay phones. You might think that this is the same as in Japan in the past. However, Myanmar is a little different in that although it is a public phone, the phones are for home use. The customer uses a phone like the one at home to make a call, and the woman charges the customer for the time measured by a clock. And she reads while she waits for the customer to arrive. What an enviable work environment.
