A barefooted man was crouched in the cluttered store. He had a hammer in his hand and was in the process of dismantling parts. Looking at the parts scattered around the man, most of them appeared to be electrical outlets. Apparently, he was separating the plastic parts of the outlet from the metal parts that could be reused.
While the parts bothered me, what bothered me even more were the piles of magazines and books stacked behind the man and in the back of the store. The piles of books in particular caught my eye. Magazines and newspapers are often seen at stands in town, but books are sold in few places in India. Compared to Japan, where bookstores are everywhere, it is difficult to find a bookstore in India. That is how few people read books in India.
