Malacca's ties to Europe are ancient. It became Portuguese territory in 1511, when Afonso de Albuquerque, Viceroy of India, conquered it. Later it became Dutch territory, then British territory, and was occupied by the Japanese during World War II, until now.
In Malacca, there is a community called Kristang, where the descendants of Portuguese and Malay or Indian mixed blood who migrated in the 16th and 17th centuries live. The photo is a boy I met in that community. Indeed, if you ask me, the boy's face looks somewhat European.
