The man wearing glasses and a cap played KAMISHIBAI, literally 'paper drama'. It is a form of storytelling that originated in Japanese Buddhist temples in the 12th century, where monks used picture scrolls to convey stories with moral lessons to a mostly illiterate audience. He had wooden sticks in his hands and hit them to attract the attention.
