A man in a hat sat perched on the seat of his cyclo, parked just off a busy street in Ho Chi Minh City. A cyclo is Vietnam’s version of the bicycle taxi — different in form from India’s cycle rickshaw, yet both evoke the same kind of foreign charm that stirs a traveler’s sense of wonder. The man was a cyclo driver, waiting for his next passenger.
For reasons I couldn’t quite place, his expression was tense. His gaze, sharp and unwavering, was fixed on the sidewalk, almost as if he were glaring at it. I couldn’t help but wonder — with a face that stern, wouldn’t it scare away the very passengers he was hoping to attract?
