Cholon, the Chinatown of Ho Chi Minh City, is home to a large Chinese-Vietnamese community. Streets lined with fruit vendors, awnings of general stores, and locals perched on low plastic stools — even in the thick, heated air, there’s a quiet sense of nostalgia lingering in the atmosphere.
On one such street corner, a cyclo was parked by the roadside. But instead of sitting on the saddle, the driver had sunk comfortably into the cushioned passenger seat. He leaned forward, arms wrapped around his knees, bare feet stretched out in front of him.
It was clear from his posture — the passenger seat offered far more comfort than the saddle ever could. In the world of cyclos, the “best seat in the house” isn’t always for the customer. For a tired back worn out by the weight of the pedals, that soft cushion may be the only true rest.
