As I wandered around the market, I saw several aquariums on the side of the road. All of the aquarium were filled with water, and there were red fishes swimming around inside. They were goldfishes. While the market sold a lot of fish for food, this place sold a lot of goldfish for ornamental purposes. Goldfish seem to be very popular here in Cirebon, Indonesia, and many people stopped to look into the tanks and buy some.
Goldfish are said to have originated in China, where they were already being bred during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, so they have a long history. Since China, the country of origin, used them as gifts, goldfish have spread to Southeast Asian countries, and even here in Indonesia, they are being cultivated. With the recent economic growth, the popularity of goldfish as ornamental fish breeding is also increasing. The ban on importing goldfish from Indonesia was lifted in 2018, and goldfish from Indonesia are now being exported to Japan.
A man wearing a cowboy hat was squatting next to the aquariums. He looked happy as he scooped up the goldfish in the tray with his hand. He was loving the goldfish as if he were caring for his own child.
