Continuing down the alleyway, I came to a place where a lot of locals were relaxing. Walking in the residential area of Jakarta, I noticed that there are two kinds of places, one is just lined with houses and the other is where the locals gather in the alley and linger. What is the difference between them?
My guess is that there isn't much of a clear difference between the two types. I think that if there is a place that is a little bit larger and where people can sit down, it is only a small opportunity for people to come together and socialize with neighbors on the street corner. And then, human relationships based on geographic connections can be built.
The father and the little girl in this photo were in a residential area of Jakarta where people were gathering, and they were lounging around like the others. The girl with the crinkly eyes was still young and may not understand how to relate to the other people in the alley. But the earthly connections that are still being nurtured at this moment will be the girl's blood and flesh, and they can be useful when she grows up, or they can be a drag.
