I was walking along a narrow street in the old city of Bhaktapur. On both sides stood tightly packed brick buildings, their walls darkened by age. In the window of one of them, I noticed a young girl. She was gazing out onto the street below.
It wasn’t a particularly busy street, so I wondered what she found so interesting to watch. As I drew closer, she noticed me at once and leaned slightly out of the window to observe me in return. Her lips were pressed together, her expression intent, almost stern. For some reason, she didn’t seem to be in a good mood. I couldn’t tell what had caused it, but I hoped—perhaps a little guiltily—that my sudden appearance wasn’t to blame.
