A girl was sitting on the side of the road a little way out from the medina in Meknes. She was a young girl, not yet covering her hair.
The girl held out her hand to the adult woman sitting across from her, who was drawing patterns on her hand. This was body art, painted with a dye made from a plant called henna. There was a woman in the open-air market who made her living drawing these patterns, and the girl had them done for her. The patterns were beautiful and the girls looked happy. Her smile made me realize that women everywhere in the world love to decorate their bodies with beautiful things, such as beautiful nails.
