In the old days, the current Futakotamagawa Station was called Futakotamagawa-en Station. The reason why the station was called Futakotamagawa-en was because there was an amusement park called Futakotamagawa-en near the station (around today's Futakotamagawa Rise). Although there is no trace of it now, Futakotamagawa Station was the closest station to the amusement park.
It is difficult to recall the days of the amusement park from the current situation with commercial facilities such as Futakotamagawa Rise and Tamagawa Takashimaya S.C. However, Futakotamagawa was not the only amusement park along the Tama River. There was also an amusement park at Tamagawa Station (which used to be called Tamagawa-en), Mukogaoka-Yuen at Mukogaoka-Yuen Station, and Keio Amusement Park at Keio-Tamagawa Station. There were several amusement parks along the Tama River, which flows along the border between Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture.
The reason why there were amusement parks along the Tama River was because this area was a bit far from the city center and suitable for an amusement park. The railroad companies operated amusement parks as a way to increase the number of railroad users, so there were several amusement parks along the Tama River. As a result of the development of the transportation network, the recreational areas were transformed into residential areas where people could commute to the city center, and the amusement parks disappeared because there was no longer any need to promote the use of the railways. The father and son holding hands in the photo in 2021 are not going to an amusement park, but to a shopping mall.
