Daruma dolls were being sold at a store near Nishiarai Daishi, and a large number of them were displayed in the store. It was natural, but not all of the eyes had been painted in yet. These are still innocent daruma dolls. They were not the Daruma dolls that had been prayed to.
Daruma was an Indian Buddhist monk who existed in the late 5th to early 6th century, but his authenticity is not certain. Regardless of its authenticity, it seems that a doll without arms and legs came to be called Daruma, based on a legend that its arms and legs had rotted away due to nine years of sitting on the face of the wall. Be that as it may, it is a little scary to see so many pupil-less Daruma dolls in a row.
