The sidewalks in the center of Yangon are filled with the energy of street vendors. The sidewalks are crowded with street vendors doing their business here and there, and the sidewalks are bustling with the goods they bring with them. The country is under international sanctions, but in spite of this, the streets are filled with fruit. It is a testament to how rich the land is in this country. Imports from abroad may be limited, but there is plenty of produce produced domestically.
The man in the photo was one such street vendor doing business on the sidewalk. He must have carried his goods here with a balance on his shoulder. The man had a balance pole in front of him, with baskets filled with guavas at both ends. These guavas are a fruit rarely seen in Japan. The man was taking guavas out of the baskets and peeling them, perhaps to let us sample them on the spot.
The aroma of guava seemed to waft through the air. For the people passing by on the sidewalk, the fruits in the man's basket were a familiar and fresh treat, and this bustle was probably a daily scene. The baskets hanging from the balance bar showed a small part of the abundance of this land, despite the simplicity of the method.
