Two boys who were playing on the footpath between rice terraces in Maligcong had a lot of leaves in their hand and were chewing incessantly. I didn't know why they were chewing them. But still, the leaves didn't look very tasty. Maybe it's just an aversion to eating.
In the Philippines, as in other Southeast Asian countries, it is customary to take a bite of betel nut leaves. Even in Taiwan, it is sold as betel nut. So I thought they were taking a bite out of betel nut, but it was different. The leaf in their hands did not look like betel nut. What kind of leaf was it?
