Bamboo is a plant that grows in many countries, although you might think that bamboo crafts are the exclusive domain of Japan. Pandas in China eat bamboo leaves, laundry in Shanghai is dried on bamboo, scaffolding on construction sites in Myanmar is made of bamboo, bridges were built using bamboo in Laos, and bamboo is used for pillars in India. Here in Berhampore, a boy stood in the shade of one of these bamboo pillars.
A boy with a big bindi looked curiously at the camera from behind a bamboo pillar. He had shaved his hair as if he had been ordained, which is rare in India. He looked a little scared. He wanted to hide behind the bamboo pole, but unfortunately the bamboo was too thin to hide behind.
