I was walking through a residential district in Taipei, surrounded by towering apartment blocks. In the city center, standalone houses are a rare sight. Here, high-rises seem to be the norm — perhaps a reflection of how space is used wisely in this densely populated city.
Looking up at one of the buildings, I noticed a flag hanging in the window — the flag of the Republic of China. Taiwan exists in a complicated space, a place that is a nation in some eyes, and not in others. And yet, that flag, quietly fluttering against the concrete, seemed to make a quiet but resolute statement: that Taiwan is here, and it stands.
