A wooden gate stood at the entrance to Tsuruyama Hachimangu Shrine. The gate had a tiled roof. The shrine building can be seen beyond. A shimenawa rope was hanging from the eaves of the shrine building, and two sacred papers were hanging from the eaves.
I looked at it without thinking much about it, but this must be unusual. In most cases, a torii gate stands at the entrance to a shrine's sacred area. But here, there is no torii to be seen. Instead, what stands is the gate in the photograph. Perhaps this is a remnant of the Shinto-Buddhist syncretism of the past.
