A number of painters were sitting on Hayam Wuruk Street, which stretches from north to south in the center of Jakarta. The reason why you can tell they are painters even though they are on the side of the street is because their works are lined up around the area, making it look like a gallery. The painters are working on their artworks, which are arranged by the sidewalk wall.
The man in the beret in the photo was one of the artists in the gallery and studio. He seemed to have just received an order and was standing in front of a canvas, making a drawing. Inside, the face of the woman in the drawing was floating in the air. The model woman was nowhere to be seen around the painter. The painter is gazing at a small phone screen. It seems that instead of having the actual model sitting in front of him, he is looking at a picture on his phone while he paints.
As I looked at the painting with this in mind, I noticed that even the woman in the canvas was wearing a hijab. I guess it was because she was wearing a hijab in the photo he was referring to, but I felt that he could decorate his canvas with his favorite hairstyles, away from the reality.
