Walking through the streets of Tainan, you will see food stalls lined up everywhere. I saw stalls selling steamed buns, snacks, fruits, etc., but what caught my eye was a stall selling a strange black object. I had never seen anything like it in Japan. It looked like a deep-fried small animal, and its shape was a bit puzzling.
Asking the owner, he told me that these were water chestnuts called “water chestnuts. The southern part of Taiwan is a production area of water chestnuts, and they are a very common food around here. Walking around town, I was certain that I had seen similar stalls many times. No wonder I thought I had seen it somewhere before.
Despite its appearance, water chestnuts are apparently a nutrient-rich food. It contains vitamins B5 and B2, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and iron, and is said to be particularly beneficial to the stomach. Still, its sharp horn-like shape and black appearance were a little too eerie to whet my appetite.
