I was ambling through the Old Town of Galle in southern Sri Lanka, a World Heritage site encased within the formidable seventeenth-century ramparts built by the Dutch. When a city receives such a grand designation, it often grows self-important, freezing into a pristine, open-air museum. Galle, however, resists such pretension. Within these massive stone walls, houses press tightly together, and residents go about the comfortable clutter of daily life—hanging laundry to dry in the sea breeze, exchanging idle gossip, and filling the air with neighborhood chatter. There is a satisfying historical irony in watching a fortress, once constructed as a stronghold of colonial domination, so thoroughly co-opted by the resilient rhythm of everyday living.

Further down these lived-in lanes, two cheerful girls came walking toward me. Catching sight of the boxy camera in my hands, they halted, watching me with wide, inquisitive eyes. The moment I raised the lens, they beamed as if on cue, offering smiles of unreserved warmth. In the early history of photography, subjects posed with rigid, solemn expressions—a pragmatic response to the long exposure times required by early equipment. Yet these two required no such patience; in a fraction of a second, they conjured a pure, instantaneous radiance.

Glancing at the girl on the right, I caught the sudden sparkle of a small earring on her earlobe. In this region, piercing a young child’s ears remains a deeply rooted custom—less a matter of personal style than a protective ritual designed to ward off illness and malignant spirits. Traditional Ayurvedic medicine similarly suggests that stimulating acupoints in the earlobe promotes physical well-being. Set against the heavy, centuries-old stone of this heritage fort, that tiny glint near her cheek whispered quietly of an ancient wisdom, humming softly beneath the surface of modern life.
