The girl's big eyes were even bigger because of her surprise

Surprising girl
Shot in the city of Malda, India

I was wandering through the sun-baked alleys of Malda, a town in West Bengal renowned for its prized mango orchards and an ancient legacy of silk trading. Yet I had come seeking neither exquisite textiles nor sweet stone fruit—I was simply ambling with no real destination in mind. Venturing deeper into a lane devoid of shade, I spotted a young girl standing quietly against a weathered mud wall. In India, parents practice Karnavedha, an ancient ear-piercing ritual meant to ward off evil spirits and wish health upon their young ones. Through this gentle gesture of parental protection, a pair of delicate silver rings glinted softly from her small earlobes.

Without much thought, I raised the square camera dangling from my neck to frame the scene. The sudden appearance of a towering foreign stranger wielding a bizarre mechanical object was, to her, clearly a shock of cosmic proportions. Her eyes—naturally large and expressive—widened to their absolute limits. While it is local custom to accentuate dark eyes with dark kohl or kajal eyeliner, her pupils needed no such help; they were so miraculously round that I harbored a fleeting, absurd fear that they might pop out and roll onto the dirt.

Looking closer into those astonishing, wide-open eyes, I saw two tiny, pristine reflections: the dazzling, sunlit alleyway of Malda, and my own absurd figure hunched awkwardly over a lens. Her mouth hung slightly agape, bearing an expression that defied description—a pure, unfiltered mix of sheer bewilderment and mild amusement. It was the quintessential textbook illustration of utter astonishment. Before those remarkably large eyes could spill out onto the ground, I hurriedly pressed the shutter.
