The girl read a book in a small local cafe

Girl reading book
Shot in the city of Pyay, Myanmar

Wandering through Pyay, a quaint, time-worn town nestled along the banks of the Ayeyarwady River. The oppressive heat eventually became too much to bear, forcing me to slip into an old, weathered teahouse just to escape the relentless glare of the sun. Naturally, there was no sign of the global coffee chain with the famous green logo here. Yet, standing almost incongruously beside this modest, rustic shop was a billiards table clad in vibrant blue felt. Introduced during the British colonial era, billiards has thoroughly woven itself into the fabric of local youth culture as a favorite pastime. It seemed that this very spot served as the pinnacle of trendy sophistication in this sleepy provincial town.

Stepping inside this supposedly fashionable haven, my eyes were drawn to a prime seat at a large wooden table. There, a young girl dressed in a bold, tropical floral print sat perched quietly. Entirely oblivious to the world around her, she kept her gaze buried deep within the pages of a thick volume, utterly consumed by her reading. Myanmar is a nation with a deep-seated history of monastic education, which has historically blessed it with an astonishingly high literacy rate compared to much of Asia. Even today, the streets are dotted with second-hand book stalls and small, privately run lending libraries. Seeing her so profoundly drowned in a sea of words was, in fact, a quintessentially everyday scene in this country.

As she remained lost in her text, my eyes drifted down to observe her posture. She had slipped off her shoes and deftly pulled both legs up onto the sturdy wooden armchair. Hugging her knees close to her chest, she perched there like a bird resting on a branch—a remarkably unique way to sit. While some might frown upon it as a lack of manners, this uninhibited pose was clearly the ultimate method of relaxation, a complete surrender to comfort. With her book cradled in her lap, the time swirling around her seemed to thicken, slowing to a gentle, syrupy crawl, as if the rest of the world had faded away.
