Durbar Square is said to refer to the square in front of the royal palace. Therefore, there are several durbar squares in Nepal, where there used to be several kingdoms. There is a royal palace and a durbar square in Patan, Kathmandu, and Bhaktapur, where the kingdom of Bhaktapur once existed.
The Durbar Square in Bhaktapur has buildings surrounding the square, and statues of a strong lion sit at the entrance of one of the buildings. The lion is probably guarding the building like a guardian dog at a Japanese shrine. The lioness looked much more fearsome than a dog, and in a sense, more dependable. A woman in a saree was walking in front of it.
