Bontoc is a mountain town, so while there are few flat areas, the few flat areas on the outskirts of town were covered with rice paddies. In one of them, rice planting was just underway. Bending forward in the paddy field, the rice was being planted by hand. It seems that rice planting has not yet been mechanized in this area.
One of the reasons for the lack of mechanization in this area seems to be that there are so many terraced rice paddies that it is impossible to build a path between rice paddies for the machinery to move through. The footpaths between rice paddies are only wide enough for one person to pass through, so they are not wide enough to move a tiller or other machinery, let alone fall into the paddies just by walking on them.
