People were stirring in the dimly lit alley

People in the back alley

Just a short walk from the city center, Ho Chi Minh City opens up into dense residential neighborhoods with a maze of narrow alleys. These backstreets are so tight that sunlight rarely finds its way in. Even in the dimness, though, life stirs—residents move about, carrying on their everyday routines.

Peering into one such alley I came across while walking, I spotted a woman in a conical hat, crouching near the entrance. Beside her was a large plastic bag, bulging with goods. A woven mat lay spread at her feet, suggesting that—like the woman further down the alley—she was preparing to set up shop right there.
