From the Kuhonbutsu River Greenway, which was built on the site of the culverted Kuhonbutsu River, walk up the hill toward Okusawa and you will soon reach the Okusawa Jinja Shrine. It is a historic shrine said to have been built in the Muromachi period (1336-1573). While the surrounding area has been completely developed into a dense residential area, the precincts of this shrine are still green, albeit narrow. As soon as you step into the shrine, you are surrounded by greenery and feel as if you are detached from everyday life. Setagaya ward designated the shrine's grounds as a forest preserve.
It is often said that Tokyo is a city with few parks, but that is probably a statement made by people who do not know the real situation. It is true that Tokyo may not have many parks. However, as a stroll around the city reveals, the precincts of shrines and temples here and there are often lush with trees, some as large as sacred trees, and others planted with other trees and greenery. The number of parks is not so small if we consider that the precincts of many shrines and temples also play the role of parks in the West.
