The man was working with a sewing machine in a small shop. The sewing machine was, of course, a foot pedal type. Electric sewing machines were still rare around here in Rangpur. I didn't know if it was rare because they were expensive machines, or if they were not widely used because the power supply was unstable. Maybe it's both.
If I look into it, more than 75% of Bangladesh's exports come from the apparel industry. And the country's minimum wage is still low; it's still about $50 a month in 2018. So until the economy develops and the minimum wage is higher, you'll probably see people doing labor-intensive work with these sewing machines.
