A large stupa towered in the center of the precinct. And the worshipers turned around the stupa clockwise. Some altars and many prayer wheels were built along the sides of it. So the worshipers walked while spun the prayer wheels and often stopped in front of altars to pray.
The objects in this photo were the prayer wheels. Their surface was filled with the passages from sutras. It is believed that to turn the prayer wheel was equivalent to chant a Buddhist sutra.
