As the night grew late, the crowds that had filled the streets began to thin, people slowly making their way home. Shinjuku Station, however, was still bustling with those trying to catch the last trains. I, too, was heading home, swept along by the current of tired, hurried footsteps. Shinjuku may be a city that never sleeps, but most still try to return before the trains stop running.
Just before the ticket gates, I caught sight of a couple standing still in the middle of the crowd. They were holding each other quietly, unfazed by the river of commuters rushing past them. No one paid them any attention—everyone was too focused on not missing their train. But the couple made no move to hurry. In that restless flow of motion, they alone remained still, as if time had paused just for them.
