A young man in a shirt with epaulets was sitting in the driver's seat of an auto-rickshaw parked on a town corner in Aurangabad. Beside the man, a machine could be seen, with the words 'FOR HIRE' written on it. Perhaps the object was a taximeter.
In my travels in India, I've taken many auto-rickshaws, but I've never taken an auto-rickshaw where the fare is calculated by a meter. Each time I rode it, I always haggled over the price. But this young man's auto-rickshaw seemed to calculate the price by meter. If you think about it that way, this auto-rickshaw might be unusual.
Seeing me staring intently at the meter, the young man might have thought I was a customer. Smiling, he seemed to expect that it was time to knock down the meter.
