Some fiogures were walking together down a dimly lit alley stretching between the tattered buildings. Across the alley, high-rise apartment buildings were towering. The huge new towers and the old two-story buildings seemed to be standing in different worlds, even though they were so close to each other in Shanghai.
I can't help but think that there is a huge disparity between the people who live in the dark alleys and the people who live in the high-rise apartments over there. In fact, there must be a huge gap. It's strange. This is a communist country, at least in theory. This is a result of Deng Xiaoping's theory of allowing individuals to grow rich firstfrom around 1985.
