Shanghai was in the midst of redevelopment. The city is a mix of old-fashioned places and redeveloped areas. As I wandered around the old neighborhoods, I saw a worn-out tricycle with a backrest parked beside an old apartment building. The front wheel appears to have an anti-theft lock on it. I have heard that there are no thieves in this country, which advocates socialism, but now that the gap between rich and poor has widened, even a well-worn bicycle may be stolen.
At the end of the street, I saw a recently built high-rise apartment building. The old neighborhood that I used to love to walk through will soon be over, and beyond it will be a redeveloped area.
