It seems that it is not only the crowds that are returning to Ueno Park in late autumn but also the return of street performers to the park. It must be more rewarding to perform street performances in a crowded place. Near the equestrian statue of Prince Akihito Komatsunomiya, a musician who seemed to come from South America was playing with a Quena.
Although I have been seeing people wearing colorful ponchos playing on the street for quite a long time in Tokyo, I think many of them used to play in groups. On this day, however, there was only one musician playing in a corner of Ueno Park. I wondered if any of the band members had returned to Japan due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
I stopped for a while and listened to the performance. The South American melodies were full of exoticism, and there were many people besides me who stopped to listen. One of them was a boy who seemed to be of Indian descent. I guess people of Indian descent also feel the exoticism of the South American melody. The boy with his hand on his back was staring at the man in a poncho playing the Quena.
