The boy in the tattered hat blinked wide-eyed and smiled shyly

Boy getting shy
Boy I encountered in Nasik

Under the relentless glare of the Maharashtrian sun, I found myself trudging through the dusty periphery of Nasik. Each step felt heavy, a reluctant negotiation with the heat. Though I was there to capture the "street," the brute weight of the SLR hanging from my neck served only to erode whatever remained of my will to walk.

In recent years, Nasik has donned a sophisticated mask, marketed as the "Wine Capital of India" or revered as a sacred stage for the Ramayana. But here in the back alleys, one finds neither the aroma of a vintage Shiraz nor the touch of divine grace. Instead, there is only the pervasive grit of topsoil and the weary gaze of onlookers.

It was amidst this haze that I encountered a boy. He was sporting a hat far too large for his head, its brim frayed to a ragged fringe. Spotting the imposing hunk of glass and metal in my hands, he approached with a slow, inquisitive gait. He was clearly fascinated by the mechanical beast I carried. While I felt no particular obligation to indulge his scrutiny, I turned the lens toward him out of sheer boredom. To my surprise, he didn’t strike a pose; instead, he offered a bashful, tentative smile, revealing a flash of white teeth.

Had he been flanked by his usual gang of cohorts, I have no doubt the scene would have devolved into a cacophony—a riotous, simian display typical of Indian alleyways when children find strength in numbers. A solitary child in these streets is a rare quietude; in a pack, they are a force of nature.

But on this day, he was utterly alone. Perhaps, deep down, he yearned to holler and dance, but there was no audience to fuel the fire, no friend to amplify the chaos. He was forced to savor the moment in solitude. He stood there, quietly rolling the novel thrill of being "captured" around in his mind like a sweet lozenge, tasting the small, extraordinary joy of it all by himself.
