A becak full of vegetables, not passengers, slowly crossed the road in front of me

Becak carrying vegetables

As I was walking down a big street in Cirebon, another Becak came running by. This time, there were no passengers on board. Instead, there were piles of vegetables on the seats. I could see a big bunch of greens like bok choy, along with tomatoes and other vegetables. It was being carried by a man wearing sunglasses.

This Becak seemed to be delivering vegetables rather than a cab. In Dhaka, Bangladesh, I also saw a cycle rickshaw carrying only luggage. In a society where bicycle cabs are common and private cars are not, it is probably not unusual for bicycle cabs to carry only luggage.

For the driver, it would be more profitable to carry just luggage from the market than to sit on the side of the road waiting for customers to arrive without doing anything. If he knew the client, he would not be confused about where to take the goods. I don't know if the driver in this photo was thinking that much when he carried the vegetables. But the man wearing a hat, sunglasses, and a towel covering most of his face gave me the impression that he was working hard.
