I was ambling through the quiet outskirts of Pyay, an ancient capital of Myanmar, where wooden stilt houses lined the path in neat, orderly rows. In Southeast Asia, elevating a home is a time-tested architectural wisdom. It serves a dual purpose: safeguarding the living quarters from torrential monsoon floods and rising damp, while simultaneously channeling the breeze to keep the interior naturally cool. Another fixtures of daily life here is thanakha—a traditional yellowish-white paste made from ground citrus bark, smeared onto children's faces as a natural sunscreen and skin conditioner. Infusing the air with a faint, woody fragrance, this cosmetic is an inseparable part of the local scenery.

Yet, despite how ubiquitous thanaka is to this landscape, the boy playing in the alley ahead of me didn't have a single trace of the white paste on his face. Running around energetically with his clothes a little dusted with dirt, his bare, unprotected skin felt remarkably unusual for this neighborhood. Perhaps his mother had simply forgotten to apply it that morning, or maybe he had stubbornly wiped it off himself. Sporting a cleanly shaven head that caught the light, he stopped dead in his tracks the moment he spotted me—a strangely dressed outsider—and began to observe me intently.

As I drew closer, he suddenly wrapped his arms around one of the weathered wooden pillars supporting a stilt house, as if to shield his shyness. Then, brushing aside my initial worry about startling him, he offered me a radiantly carefree, beaming smile. Dressed in a simple plaid shirt, he revealed a row of tiny, adorable teeth as he grinned. Clinging to that ancient pillar while smiling with the warmth of an old friend, his small, proud face left an impression that was utterly disarming.
