The young woman sat alone on the bench and read a book

Reading in Yoyogi Park

I found myself wandering aimlessly through Yoyogi Park, a sprawling verdant lung in the heart of Tokyo. This land carries the weight of a complex lineage: once an Imperial Army parade ground, then Washington Heights—a residential enclave for U.S. forces following the war—before finally being reborn as the public sanctuary it is today.

Yet, walking here now, beneath the lush, sprawling canopy, one finds it impossible to sense the lingering scent of that restless history. The air feels only of peace. As my legs began to grow heavy from my purposeless strolling, I scanned the surroundings for a place to rest. Scattered throughout the park are simple wooden benches—convenient, humble offerings for the weary traveler.

On one such bench sat a young woman, solitary and still. She held a book in her hands, one knee drawn up onto the slats, completely lost in the world within the pages. In the distance, just behind her, a group of people were caught in the noisy rhythm of a ball game. They shouted and ran, but she remained indifferent, seemingly unaware that a stray ball might fly her way at any moment. She was anchored in the realm of printed words. I watched her for a moment, thinking how undeniably pleasant it must be to read like that—bathed in the shifting patterns of dappled sunlight and brushed by the gentle breath of early summer.

Until I saw her, the notion of reading in a park had never once crossed my mind. Whenever the urge to read strikes, my feet instinctively carry me toward the dim, familiar corners of a neighborhood café. For me, the bitterness of coffee and the slow curl of cigarette smoke have always been the indispensable tools of the craft. But watching this stranger turn pages with such serene contentment under the shade of a tree, I began to reconsider. Perhaps, just this once, it wouldn't be so bad to trade the smoke for the open sky and follow the lines of a story beneath the blue.
