A man was working in a small store in Nasik. The man standing at a low counter in the front of the store was an ironer. He had an old-fashioned iron in his hand and was just ironing.
In my travels in India, it is not uncommon to see craftsmen still using foot-operated sewing machines that are not electrically powered, and the iron this man was using was also not the type heated by electricity, but what is called a charcoal iron, which uses the heat of the charcoal fire inside to remove wrinkles.
Many of the tools you see around here are not electrified. Electric washing machines are rare, so when I go to the river, I see women washing clothes by hand, and sewing machines are foot-operated. Ironing is also done over a charcoal fire.
