On the streets of Yangon, the capital of Myanmar, there are always people at work. Street vendors, boys carrying fruit baskets—and the man in this photograph was one of them. Under the harsh afternoon sun, he worked silently and steadily. I couldn’t quite tell what his task was, but the dust-covered tools scattered around him made it clear that they were part of his daily life, perhaps even an extension of his hands.
At one moment, I raised my camera, and he looked up with a suspicious expression, frowning slightly as if to ask, “What are you taking a picture of?” Maybe I had interrupted his work, or maybe he simply couldn’t understand why a foreigner would find this scene worth photographing. Yet, people in Yangon are generally calm and tolerant; they rarely get angry. This man, too, after that initial furrow of the brow, seemed to lose interest in me, returning his gaze to whatever task occupied his hands.
