I was walking in the center of Kandy. Streets were lined with stores. And there were signs posted on wall after wall. The town was bustling with many people walking around. As I walked through the town, I saw some unique signs. I was the only Gentile who thought it was unusual, but perhaps it was commonplace here.
A sign on the wall of a shopping mall featured the portrait of former British Prime Minister Churchill. Churchill, who had also served as colonial minister (an unthinkable title today), still watches the traffic in his former colonies. What about portrait rights when a person is used on a poster like this? If he were a celebrity, would Churchill be treated as a public figure and be free to use his likeness? In any case, it does not feel right to have the prime minister of a former suzerain state on a street corner poster in a colony that has achieved independence. I wonder what Churchill is like to the people of Sri Lanka.
