As I was walking through the center of Kandy in central Sri Lanka, I saw an older woman wearing a saree walking along the sidewalk. In this country, as in India and Nepal, there are many saree-clad women walking around the city. The sarees that could be seen here and there in the town looked very exotic to me from Japan, and I enjoyed just walking around.
When I turned my attention to a building on the side of the street, I saw that it was boarded up and had a lot of paper on the walls. It seemed that the building was not in use. Some of the posters complained in English and some in Sinhala. Even though Sri Lanka was a British colony, English is not that common here. Considering this, the messages written in English might have been addressed to people with higher education.
