Taipei also has markets for locals in the center of the city. The one I visited a day ago was a market with a brave name, Chenggong Market (成功市場), built beside an apartment complex. Whenever I travel, I always go to local markets. Although they don't sell any souvenirs, I enjoy going to local markets because I feel like I get a glimpse into the daily lives of the locals. And unlike markets for tourists, neither the shoppers nor the people doing business there wear the masks for tourists. In other words, everyone is walking around without makeup. Some of the neighbors are walking around with literally no makeup on, and it is fun just to wander around.
That is why I came to a market named Bailan in Taipei's Daan District on this day. The market is located just off the main street, with stores lining both sides of the street. The market was not very crowded. Shoppers were leisurely looking at what they were selling. As I walked along with the locals, I saw a woman sitting in front of a store, not moving a muscle. It was as if time had stopped around her. She looked tired and exhausted, even though it was only mid-morning.
